The general equations governing the interactions between gases (vapours) and glass melts are presented, as well as the appropriate initial boundary conditions. The transport of gases and ions in the liquid phase, the surface reaction and the transport in the gas phase are taken into account as the necessary steps of the dissolution or evaporation process. The negligible influence of dissolved gases or concentration of volatilized component on the melt properties is considered. The physical and chemical dissolution of gases in glass melts - including oxidation-reduction reactions - is treated as an example of gas - glas melt interaction: dissolution of N₂, CO₂ and water vapour in the melt, interaction between SO₂ + O₂ and glass melts containing oxidation-reduction pairs, gas transport between two glasses of similar composition but different redox state and reaction of water vapour with sulphate ions in the melt. |
