A 1 : 1 by wt. mixture of mullite (3Al₂O₃.2SiO₂) with CaO reacts under hydrothermal conditions producing a hydrogarnet phase having the composition 3CaO.Al₂O₃.SiO₂.4H₂O. When a graded amount of CaSO₄.2H₂O (15 and 20 % respectively) is added to the starting components before autoclave treatment, the reaction yields hydroxylellestadite Ca₁₀(SiO₄)₃(SO₄)₃(OH)₂ together with "soluble" anhydrite CaSO₄ (III). lt was shown at the same time that approximately up to 4 % SO₃ can be substituted in the crystal lattice of the hydrogarnet phase.
