Investigation of the 700 cm-1 and 350 cm-1 regions of infrared absorption spectra of rapidly quenched akermanite melts implies that its melting brings about formation of shorter (n > 2) chains of SiO₄ tetrahedrons. On the basis of an empirical relationship between the Si-O-Si angle and the frequency of type A1 valency vibration in crystalline akermanite, the informative value of this angle was found to be 143 deg.
