Preparation and characterization of TiO2-MnO sol-gel layers on glass

L. Rodriguez Paez, J. Matoušek

Mixed oxide layer (TiO2-MnO) was prepared by the sol-gel method using tetra-n-butyl-orthotitanate and manganese nitrate as precursors. Thermal transformation behaviour of the fresh xerogel was observed by thermal analysis. Sol-gel coatings were deposited by dip-coating method and the preparation of the films was finished by heat treatment. The surface of the layers was observed using optical microscope and by SEM. Good and uniform coatings were obtained from the peptised solutions. The film thickness was 147 and 158 nm for the second and third coating. After heat treatment, anatase and/or rutile crystals were observed in the layers according to the temperature of heat treatment which varied from 550°C to 800°C. Typical optical absorption peak of the films was observed using UV spectrophotometer in the range of 250-390 nm. The layers do not show any protection effect against water corrosion. The refractive index of the layers was found to depend on the number of subsequent coatings used for their preparation.
